Nah i'm still tryna figure this out. Back in the VK days, they were always up there in any say, top 5 bands that weren't MUCC and Merry. I amassed a decent amount of plays, and I bought most of their albums, not to mention a live. But for some reason, i listened to them last October and it's turned into a ridiculous going on five month long binge fest where they're constantly on the top of my weekly, monthly, and last year's charts. I also took advantage of CDJ's proxy shopping (which is srsly awesome btw) and bought their two compilation albums with most of their MVs included, plus the rest of the lives I didn't have. Which i think was five.

Some of my sugoi obsession is Wataru bc his singing was really something else lol. Probably one of the best vocalists from that era for sure, and so different from like, a Hizumi who is very technically sound and controlled. But Wachi is like the singing equivalent of a parkour athlete, careening off all his various vocal effects. The way he jumps from his dark lower register into a much brighter mid-register honestly makes him sound like a different person sometimes. Plus, he was honestly really good live too. And generally pretty serious about singing, like he didn't do a bunch of weird antics. I found out that he did have a vocal coach too. I never heard him have breathing issues. And even in XII Party when part of his middle register was shredded, he was actually able to sing around it.

But the other thing is that, idk who was primarily responsible for their composing, but their songs are so well constructed. They're memorable and catchy without suffering from some of the murky sludge that a lot of VK was known for. I don't have great things to say about their "let's sound like Diru" era, that was apparently a thing for every single freaking band that signed with Free Will, ironic lmao. Merry did it too for awhile. But even songs from that era were fairly salvageable, mostly thanks to Wachi.

The only thing i can figure out is that i didn't get super into them back then bc i didn't really know anyone in the band besides Wachi, and he only landed on my radar bc of the choking incident lmao. Apparently he was also arrested for having a weapon at an airport. Well, he was also fairly prolific on Tanuki too. Got his n00ds leaked. Aside from all THAT, he seemed like an interesting guy lmao. He's kinda funny now, like he said recently he couldn't talk about his past on some radio show he was doing bc it was all R-rated.

I watched some random interviews and comments on YT too and whew he has a really low speaking voice, it's kinda incongruous with his appearance bc he's easily the shortest in the group. There were also some comment things where he literally said nothing the whole time, didn't even change expression. I also never saw him smoke in the BTS stuff, though i saw all the other members do so. That would also be unusual for that time period.

So anyway lol

It's been freezing for what feels like weeks now lmao. I think it's only days, but it feels like weeks whew. Lately, I'm not sure if i want 12012 to come back or if I just want Wataru to do his own thing. I was always discussing the levels of good singing or lack thereof in VK back then, but I honestly didn't give Wataru enough credit. And he only got stronger as a singer too. I found his YT channel the other day and saw that he'd posted a cover of Mother by LUNA SEA. Now, if you know me, you know I was always a huge fan of Ryuichi's voice, like he was an insanely good singer, presumably still is lol. Anyway, wow Wataru's cover was super good. In some parts, he actually sounded almost exactly like Ryuichi. I was super impressed.

I should listen to whatever else he has up since they're all only a few years old. The thing is too, he's shown himself capable of singing in a variety of different styles. I didn't appreciate his Kyo copying, but I'll say that he was better at it than Kyo lmao. Meanwhile, tryna get the rest of 12012's DVD collection through proxy shopping. I wasn't gonna bother with their last live, mostly bc i thought it would be filled with crap from the self-titled and those EPs, but actually, it only has the songs from XII, which was actually good compared to the other two EPs that i can't really remember the names of but they were terrible. Icb those are the only albums on Spotify. Total fail.

Anyway, was bored the other day and decided to rank their albums, which is my main reason for posting hahah.

1. Diamond - like fucking omg this album is just heads and tails above every other album. There are really no skips, and almost every song is just perfect. I literally fave'd most of the album on Last FM. Mr. Liar, The Moon, Shine, 24HOURS, Cyclone, Dispute, Secret Festival, it's ridiculous. Wataru finds the perfect balance of singing, screaming, and his various awesome vocal effects. Production is clear and compositions are clean.

2. Play Dolls - kind of a hard chocie between this and Not Obtain, but it's a little less rough since it's mostly all new songs and not a compilation of earlier singles. Highlights include Cheeky Doll, Hermit, Icy Cold City, The Swim, My Room Agony. But there's really no skips on this one either. Contains some of my all time faves.

3. Mar Maroon - had the most annoying production quality, but there are some seriously cool songs on here that i have to put it in their top three. Generation, System 0 Down, DNA, I Deal, As, and mostly Psycho Virus except for Wataru's kinda fail scatting. The rest of the songs are admittedly pretty poppy, but it's still an enjoyable listen for anyone who likes Wataru's singing lmao me obviously.

4. Not Obtain - so this is just mostly their indies stuff gathered in one album, but presumably they thought it was their best stuff from then so... Incur, Swallow, Sick, Knife, Shower are all pretty good tracks. I don't find that compared to a lot of VK bands, 12012 was particularly rough early on.

5. Seven - the beginning of the end lol. This was their first album after the departure of the cool guitarist who maybe had a big say in their sound??? This album is an obvious transition in sounds. So it has some good stuff like Usobeni to Ame, One Step, Tattoo, and the super long song name that translates to "Play the cards you're dealt, whatever that means" lol. But there's also a lot of forgettable shouty sludgy songs.

6. 12012 - and this one made everything worse. There's a disc 2 with reprises of some of their most famous early songs like Vomit, My Room Agony, and 6 Party, but the main album is forgettable as fuck. There is honestly not a single good song. Not to say that they're /bad/ but they're not good either. I'm glad i never bought it lmao.

With regards to their EPs, Only XII is worth mentioning bc the other two are more of the same suckitude from teh self-titiled. XII was actually very good. Only The Red was a bit dodgy, but the rest nicely showcased Wataru's strong vocals and the music wasn't bad either.

welp

HIghkey completely forgot about this place and what I was even doing with it oh well lol. My year in media has been really weird bc like, in the first half it was all dramas, so much dramas, but then for some reason, music nostalgia hit in July and i got RE OBSSESSED with Hilcrhyme, which is actually just TOC so it was him i got obsessed with lol. And even though i've mostly kept up with all his releases and whatnot, I didn't keep up with the lives, so i ATTACKED CDJ and bought a whole bunch, including some albums I was missing and stuff with DVD lives bc he's such a great performer. I haven't even watched them all because...even though my plays were insane for three months, then I hit a block of good dramas.

Namely I Am Nobody and Love YOu Seven Times, which were excellent and I was sad when they ended. But then in October, another storm of nostalgia for old music faves happened, this time for 12012. Yes, Visual Kei band 12012 that disbanded almost ten years ago now, and whom was oddly polarizing in the fandom, and I rarely admitted how much i actually stanned them and especially vocalist Wataru who was eventually maligned by the neutered VK i-fandom bc he was arrested for choking a girl.

Ofc since my own VK heyday, I know a lot more Japanese and have found out A TON OF SHIT about VK that ifans had zero idea of lol. I mean, he is a bit of a dodgy character since he took part in Harcon and was also previously detained or arrested not sure for being caught with a weapon at an airport.

BUT, he was still an excellent singer by VK standards and his Tanuki reviews were /quite/ good lmao. So between my ridiculous stanning of his singing and the fact that 12012 made honestly really good music, my plays have gone super out of control. I proxy-shopped for their best-of albums as well bc it included all their MVs. I regret nothing. ~~~~~

It is funny though, despite rarely talking about how much i liked them (stanning Wataru was taboo back then), i was sekritly collecting most of their albums and lives. I even had a few singles. Needless to say i've been watching and listening on repeat.

VK is a bit weird now, but there are still some good bands releasing stuff, like XAAXAA for example.
