my hate affair with modern romance dramas
Mar. 6th, 2023 01:03 pm Long time no see DW lol. Gonna put this here to not clog up my LJ and whatnot. Actually, there's no rhyme or reason what I put here or there. 8D. But so, i watch and have watched a LOT of Asian dramas over the years. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese. iT'S MOstly Chinese these days and I haven't watched a Taiwan in years now. But as many different genres as i'm willing to try, the modern romance drama has just GOT to be the most difficult shit to get right. I won't even touch medical, so that's not a thing.
By modern romance i mean a drama set in modern times where the romance is more or less the main goal and there are not any extra genres like crime, action, comedy, mild fantasy/sci-fi, etc. And I don't mean /friendship/ dramas where there might be romance, but it's mainly about the friendship of a group of guys and gals. Upon looking over my entire drama list, I can only find about five that I actually finished and enjoyed. They all had one thing in common: they were either Japanese dramas, or they starred Vic Zhou.
So my question to myself is WHY the heck I keep tryna watch them when they suck so bad. I actually used to watch Taiwan ones when they were popular, but most of them sucked as well. It seems like only Japan can get the modern romance drama right. I think the main reason they do is bc they're short. No one wants to watch 40 or even 20 episodes of melodramatic nonsense.
Sadly, part of why I watch or try to watch the Chinese ones is that inevitably, it's the only way i can hear a favorite actor's real voice. Supposedly, that's changing, but not fast enough. Right now I have two on my list in Moonlight with Ding Yuxi and Win the Future with Chen Kun. DY is super cute and his character in that drama is hilarious, but everything else about it is super annoying, and mainly that's the FL.
Chen Kun is one of my top favorite actors EVER, but i'm struggling to enjoy the appropriately acronym-ed WTF. The subject matter is just so boring and just when you think less things could happen, even LESS happens.
So I'm super mad that I'm still considering watching She and Her Perfect Husband with Xu Kai and Love At Night with my newest crush Liu Xueyi. Bc they are prolly long and i will prolly hate them by episode 10 or so.
UGH.
i AM JUST SURE they could do a better job of making these dramas interesting. And they could start by halving the amount of episodes.
