This time I watched West Lake Moment also starring Zhou Xun. It's hard to describe exactly why i liked this movie, but i did, a lot in fact. It was entertaining, well-shot, and funny at times. The basic story is that ZX's character is a barista/owner of a coffee shop on West Lake in Huangzhou. She and a guy who is now a college student survived a car accident together. She says he's too young, but he clearly has interest in her. This really isn't a major plot point though. One plot point though is that ZX's character has an inner child whom she occasionally talks to. When things start, she's actually engaged to a white dude, but that doesn't work out.

Chen Kun is a playboy scriptwriter who ends up involved with ZX while he has another girl back in Beijing. He eventually breaks up with the latter and shacks up with ZX, but runs from her eventually too. This is all told mainly in short scenes that put the larger story together. The two get together again at the end. LIke i said, i can't really explain why i like it. Though lol, this one scene was so funny. CK and his gf are hanging out, reading magazines or something, and he reads a passage that says "Zhang Ziyi says she's the sexiest woman" or smth like that. CK laughs and is like, well, clearly she hasn't seen Shu Qi.

I LOL'd. This is an old movie, like 2004, but i always remember back in the earlier days, Ziyi was like the IT Chinese actress, but CK's character is right, let's not pretend she's supa sexy when Shu Qi exists.

Anyway, I'm on a kick of watching and rewatching Chen Kun's movies. I have this free trial of some channel at Amazon though, so ig i will have to watch the Painted Skin movies and Flying Swords might be on there too. Otherwise, i've located Balzac, Rest On Your Shoulder, The Door, Music Box, Kung-Fu Girls, and Bends. Plus I have My Ex-Wife's Wedding and Love on Credit.  Still not finding the Knot or Baober. AND there's these clips i keep seeing where he's wearing a red and blue sweater and i haven't been able to find anything that matches that. It's old, that's all i know, and i can't really figure out who the girl is.

So thanks to a um...compilation thingy on YT, i've decided to fill the gaps of my Chen Kun movies. I think the only two other major movie actors where I've watched everything they've been in are Stephen Chow and Andy Lau. There might be a few holes in my completion of Andy's filmography, but I watched EVERYTHING Stephen Chow was in, even if he was just a support role lol. ETA - Oh i tell a lie, I've also seen everything Nic Tse and Cecilia Cheung has been in, at least up until a point when i started mostly watching just dramas.

Anyway, so I finally got to watch Zhong Kui, Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal, which is a very unwieldy boring name, BUT that's also pretty much what it's about: ZhongKui, Snow Girl, and the Dark Crystal lmao.

Basic plot surrounds Zhong Kui, the anti-hero devil punisher dude from Chinese mythology. Played by Chen Kun. He's being handled by some guy, a master who either is an immortal or is trying to be, not sure. But the dark crystal is some super special item that allows demons to reincarnate or smth like that. Zhong Kui steals it and naturally a bunch of demons come to get it back. Li Bingbing plays Snow Girl, who is actually a snow demon that ZK met when he was a human. They're initially on opposite sides, but then ZK finds out some inconvenient truths and they end up on the same side again.

This was a pretty action-heavy, CG magic-heavy film and it definitely looked good. I liked the whole desert city aesthetic and whatnot. It was more action fantasy movie than anything else. Chen Kun is...wow lol. You show me anyone else who can look hot wearing a big fake beard lmao. I think he had a couple of good fight scenes and it reminded me of a recent interview where he mentioned a movie he filmed a year or so ago that hasn't come out yet, Weary Poet, where he said they had no stunt doubles and he had to do his own stunts and it was exhausting at his age or something lol.

Idk i remember every movie I watched of his in the past always had some good sexytimes and this one did too. I swear, Chinese movies used to be pretty racy, but now they're pretty badly censored as far as I can tell. This one was 2015 so not too bad in that respect kek.

Next up, I think i'll try to find West Lake Moment. There's one on YT but idk if it's subbed.

Finally, after miscalculating the launch time, I managed to watch the first episode of the Wind Blows from Longxi on iQIYI.  First, subs are great. NOt waiting for Viki to get their shit together lmao. Second, the opening is awesome, kinda like ROP with an epic instrumental and the graphics of flames and statues and swords. Then we jump into the setup of the complicated spy plot. Which, btw, very helpful, there's some dude at the end who highkey recaps everything and gives you an idea of what to expect next, so JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T FOLLOW EVERYTHING.

It's also useful bc this being very strongly historic, everyone is largely dressed similarly and with similar hairstyles. It's fairly difficult to recognize individual people unless you're extremely familiar with what they look like, i.e. Chen Kun for me lol. In the very first episode, it's hard to connect names with faces, so the recap of who's who was SUPER HELPFUL.

Four eps are already available but i just had to see the first one ASAP. Chen Kun is ofc hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng. I love his voice so much. I heard the ending was done by New Pants, but i forgot to listen to it ugh lol. I used to like them but haven't heard anything in a long time so yeah i meant to listen to that.

The basic gist of what's going on...Chen Kun plays Chen Gong and he and Xun Xu (Bai Yu) are sworn brothers and Shu spies infiltrating Wei. IN the previous action, Chen Gong's intelligence report was swapped but Gong essentially says that they would never believe it was swapped but instead assume Gong gave them fake intelligence. There are also some people who suspect Gong to be super spy Baidi, but I'm not clear on whether he is or not.

Anyway!  It looks promising and i absolutely love historical dramas with all this attention to detail and natural lighting and no one's walking around in fancy robes loooking like they just ponced out of a dress shop. Very refreshing. I'm super sad that it's only 24 episodes though ugh i was hoping for a 70 episode epic like ROP.

My drama situation is volatile and might change at any time lol. After watching some reallly great stuff earlier in the year I've been struggling to find things that are good enough to keep my attention. Sword Snow Stride and Welcome were probably the best for awhile and I thought I was really digging Tomorrow, but somehow I totally skipped it this weekend in order to restart Stealth Walker, but more importantly to start Once UPon a Time in Lingjian Mountain.

LOL so the latter was completely random to an extent, but i found it via tropes i like, namely older woman-younger man and master-student, except it's reversed master-student hahah. It was also on Netflix. AS it turns out it also hits a rare category that I really like: the funny goofy wuxia/xianxia. I come from the era of watching goofy HK wuxia and i highkey miss that style now, and i honestly RARELY see it so this one got me going after the first episode once I actually realized what it was. I also have never gotten the ifan appeal of Xu Kai, but in a rare reversal, I will say that I definitely see it now lmao. He's very funny, first of all, but also he has a unique appearance he is pretty attractive.

I also SUPER like the FL though too like i srsly wish she was in more stuff she is HILARIOUS. Her expressions are so great. Oh and the dubbing in this is really bad, but again, that actually kinda helps how absurd it is. The basic story has something to do with the ML being some genius with a special ability that no one knows how to cultivate, so he's relegated to being a mascot of this sect he tried really hard to join. BUT it turns out that the FL knows how to do it so she becomes his master. The FL however is more interested in wine and money than helping him, OR SO IT SEEMS.

I think i'm like 14 eps in yet, so not quite halfway through. There are several different plot threads happening, though they're kinda background for goofy hijinks and whatnot. The CGI and SFX are quite good and even the choreo isn't bad when it's supposed to be serious.

Anyway I'm extremely digging it and so far it's kinda what I was hoping Romance of Tiger and Rose would continue to be before it started taking itself too srsly and became rather mean. In the meantime, I'm waiting for Who Rules the World with Yang Yang and the girl from that to start airing on Netflix on Thursday, and also the Wind Blows From Longxi with Chen Kun, which I think i saw might air on iQIYI but not sure. I just saw a BTS of his fight scenes and nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn i'm gonna love this so much. Plus he has scruff.

What I can't figure out is why I'm not tryna watch Chen Kun's most recent two dramas lol. I got distracted I guess. But so i'm doing a drama challenge this year and this is how it's shaking up so far with the first two levels.  The only one i don't have planned is the comedy drama. I'm not sure what qualifies in my list lol. I also don't know for sure that Fishbowl Wives will be my Jdrama entry, i might go with Gibo to Musume no Blues. And I might also watch Moonlight instead of Miss Hammurabi lol.
