kdrams for n00bs

And here's the part where I attempt to explain Kdramas to someone who's never watched them before. Basically in the same format as the previous one.

Korean Dramas

Intro - Kdramas tend to be less genre-specific than Cdramas. That is, you can usually catagorize them loosely into modern and historical. Kdramas don't typically do anything like wuxia and only recently have they started adding fantasy elements to some historical dramas. If there's fantasy in Kdramas, it's usually in modern ones and tends to blend supernatural with reality like it's commonly accepted. This usually involves ghosts and grim reapers and sometimes humans with magical powers. Korean dramas are usually one hour per episode and the common length is 16 but may be slightly more or less. Kdramas usually fall into the following categories:

Saeguk - this is what they call their historicals and unlike Cdramas, these don't always involve the royal family or palace intrigue, which is kind of nice so you can see regular people. However, there was a very strong slave culture in ancient Korea that might be startling to Western viewers, as well as a lot of misogynistic attitudes that are often less emphasized in Cdramas. FTM crossdressing is a lot more convincing for various reasons though. THere's a lot more emphasis on realism. Example: Slave Hunters

Modern Romance (romcom) - Like Cdramas, this is fairly self-explanatory, but Kdramas tend to be a lot more creative in their romcom stories and they're usually steamier too lol. Korean modern romances might be heavy on the comedy, or they might even include a decent amount of action. Example: My Suspicious Partner

Action/Thriller - This is kind of a blanket category bc it isn't as narrowly focused as Cdramas, there might be gangs and drugs, or it might largely be white collar crime or govt related. May or may not include romance. It will usually be heavy on fighting and other action scenes. Example: The K2 or The Veil (both highly recommended btw)

Soap/Family - this is a category I honestly never watch bc it's boring lol, but these tend to be overdramatic and center around a Chaebol family or families and their travails. There's usually multiple romance lines. Example: Magic

Urban Fantasy/Ghosts - These are usually but not always set in modern times and involve supernatural things like ghosts, gods, monsters, shapeshifters, ghost fighters, etc. Unlike Cdramas, there's nothing prohibiting explicit supernatural content so they won't pretend it's something else. Example: Let's Fight Ghost, Goblin

Psychological - THis is somewhat similar to action/thriller, but typically includes a strong psychological element of some kind. May or not include action and/or romance. Example: Save Me

Youth - one thing that's fairly annoying about Korean youth dramas is that the actors are often way too old to play the parts and it's kind of obvious. Youth dramas are usually set in high school, but might be university and there's almost always a bullying storyline of some kind. Example: Police University

Final notes - Korean dramas usually choose to emphasize comedy or be very serious. I would say most include some comedic elements. The Veil might be the one I've watched that was not funny in some way. There's often a lot more physical fighting in Kdramas vs Chinese. You can expect more overt misogyny from male characters as well. There's usually at least one unreasonable "witch" female character. If you see a random blur on the screen, it's probably a knife or other sharp implement. The same doesn't apply to guns lol.

Kdrama Pros:

- Usually really well-done in terms of effects, acting, and editing, very polished
- Fighting is generally realistic and up close
- Real kisses in romances
- Lots of good supernatural plots
- Comedy is usually pretty natural

Cons:

- Historicals are usually boring asf
- A lot of overbearing male characters
- Tend to be too long for the amount of real plot
- REALLY obvious product placement
- In modern ones, everything tends to be too shiny and pretty
- Too many chaebol characters

Kdrama 101 (i.e. five representative dramas to watch first)

1. The K2
2. Goblin
3. Our Blooming Youth
4. W
5. Good Manager

oh hai

Guess i got bored of updating here lol.  I kinda took a looooong break from dramas and i was just watching FMAB and the occasional movie. I watched Shadow with Deng Chao, Saving General Yang, Legendary Amazons, and the Thousand Faces of Dunjia, oh and the Suspect with Gong Yoo. None of them were super amazing, but Legendary Amazons was by far the worst, ugh lol.  Then finally Lost in Kunlun Mountains came out, but so far I'm not super gripped by it.  Xu Kai is hot af though. I guess that's why he got away scot free from his scandals lol. Never underestimate the way female fandoms forgive their idols when they're super hot.

The other drama I've been looking forward to all year is Big Mouse with Yoona and Lee Jongsuk, but wow is it annoying to have to watch it on pirate channels and not a major platform on my ROku. Idgi. Two big names too. However, it IS living up to my expectations so far. Kwak Dongyeon is also in it in a support role. LJS stans are pretty annoying though gotta say. I hate when fans act all familiar like that, barf. I really liked him in W and I Hear Your Voice, but idk that i find him super attractive or whatever. Yoona though, ugh, why isn't she in more stuff? I love her acting and her expressions and stuff.

In other news, the FMA movies are coming to Netflix starting on August 20th. And a new NUL album is coming out the 21st. I've been angsting over both of those for months now hahah.

Keep waiting for news of D3 but nothing yet. Saw a pic of B circulating the other day on Twitter and lol he's not even attractive to me anymore. i feel annoyed just seeing his face. Have been reading the Golden Hairpin and i really think they need to remake that with a totally different cast. Shubai should be played by either Xu Kai or Ding Yuxi and Zixia should be played by Zhao Lusi. Yang Zi is too old for the part and tbh Yifan was too. The ages were 24 and 17. Zhao Lusi looks super young even for 23. It's a good book though and i think it'd make a good drama.

Meanwhile, I have a bunch of other dramas to finish yet lol but I'm busy looking at new ones. :x  There's one with Ma Tianyu and Angelababy that might air soon and i really would like to see that pairing.

things i've finished lately

Got bored of the WMM so lemme just do this lol.  Starting with...

Daybreaker - for some reason it took me forever to get through the last three episodes. Some of that was being distracted by FMA, but also, the show really got convoluted towards the end and every time you thought it was tryna climax, something else twisted would happen.  At least half the main cast eventually died too. Some for seemingly no reason just to add to the body count. Idk i mean overall i thought it was solid and the main bulk of the show was really great. I would generally give it a positive score.

Young Babylon by Lu Nei - Just finished this last night and tbh i really fucking enjoyed it.  I started reading it on a total whim when I saw a casting melon of Hou Minghao as the ML Lu Xiaolu. It was not at all what I expected, but somehow really entertaining at the same time. It was also very explicit at times so i'm honestly super curious at what a drama version will look like. All it does is follow in the first person a young factory worker in Daicheng. But the POV character is so colorful and hilarious that it just makes the whole book. The only downside is now i'm prolly gonna have some high expectations for the drama lol.

Tomorrow - Started watching this when it was airing but only just finished it.  EH.  I had a strong love/hate with this show. The first idk ten or so episodes were very gripping and i thought it tackled some difficult subject matter, some of it fairly unique to Korea, but most of it pretty relevant no matter where you are. However, it got very strongly preachy later on and i felt like there was a lot of idk hand waving that the death gods got away with. Things I liked...the guy who played Ryunggoo who has like no major roles before this drama. He was really good and i'd like to see him get more lead roles. Kim Sohee was very hot.  The reversal of Park Junggil's character was also good.   Things I didn't like...the Seventeen guy was highkey annoying most of the time. I didn't like that there was nothing between Ryeon and Junggil at the end despite the fact that he obviously still had feelings for her. They could have broken up the preachy message stuff with a bit of romance, just saying.

Anyway I'm down to i think six dramas on my CW list now ROFL.  I am also intent on finishing FMA.  I'm not overly excited about anything left on that list either, which is annoying, but idk if there's anything i've been waiting for out yet. I really wanted to watch the Kunlun Mountain thing but...oh and Big Mouth is airing end of July so that's something. Otherwise Idk lol.

hurdle

Suho's album was indeed really good. Way better than his first one. Liked every song a lot, except I think Moment was a bit boring lol but yeah. My new philosophy wrt EXO is to stan the solos of all non-traitor members.  That's the only way I can avoid the traitors without completely trashing EXO. Though, if they release another album and Chen is in it, I'll probably listen. He's honestly the only member i LEGIT care about anymore.

In other news, I finished King In Love finally. I won't really go back on my dislike of the CP bc i thought he was honestly a selfish asshole and just bc he did some ok things at the end doesn't really change that. At least Rin and San got to be together, i think that's all i cared about lol.  Speaking of that kind of investment, I had this weird realization the other night when I was watching Sword Snow Stride that part of why I really like it, other than it's unusually funny for a wuxia/xianxia, is that I /don't/ have any investment in any certain character, narrative, or couple. So it's like oddly UN stressful to watch.

Now, you'd probably generally equate investment with engrossing, but it doesn't seem like that's the case bc i've been totally engrossed in watching SSS, i'm just not invested in any specific aspect of the show. It makes sense in my head lol. I mean, just compare it to King In Love that I just finished. I was VERY invested in 1. Rin and San being together as a couple and 2. Rin and San not dying. Both of those things were very in doubt at different times, which = more stressful to watch.

My question is kinda whether investment is just a personal thing that depends on the person and the show, or if there is some kind of secret manipulation these shows engage in to create that level of stressful investment lol. Not sure, but i really like SSS for not having that. To a certain extent, ToTC had that too bc i felt sure that Su Mo would complete his mission and more or less live. I wasn't invested in him and the girl though or even the kingdom coming back.

ANYWAY lol.  I also finished Lotus Palace, the first full length i read from Jeannie LIn. The ending was kinda funny, but it worked. Now that i know the plot of the second book, i like how she kinda set it up with a few hints in this one. The feeling of reading a romance Cdrama with the addition of sexytimes, i like it. Speaking of that, rating her sex scenes, she mostly does a good job i'd say. Sex scenes in romance novels are so controversial bc sometimes they're incredibly absurd in tihe language used is massively cringe. But other than the unforgivable use of the term "organ" she did a good job. Tbh, it's more offensive when authors use ridiculous language for the girl's parts lol and she didn't do that.

That's about it. I feel like I'm really juggling my dramas lately lol. AND I want to start Tomorrow, which is ongoing so i will be prevented from binging but i have to start it soon bc they release 2 eps per week but it goes into May 20th or smth.

hit the floor

I post-dated my entry on LJ friends moving over here, but I still maintain that I'm not moving my own blogging ooperation over here unless something legit happens to LJ.  So this will still be mainly extra overflow entertainment crap and rants that i don't feel like updating LJ with lol. I will check my reading page though as more people get here.

Anyway, so the iQIYI app has been stupid for me for days now. At first it wouldn't load at all, then it loads, but slowly and if i try to pick a drama, it boots me back to the Roku homepage. I was tryna either continue Moonlight or start a rewatch of Royal Secret Agent. Instead, I went back to Viki where I finished "finished" the Lost Tomb entry I was on, restarted King In Love, and started Welcome.  First, idc who apologizes for it, that entry in the Lost Tomb series is AWFUL. Writing was bad, pacing was bad, acting was bad, it was all BAD. I honestly liked the first two series but man, if this was anyone's first encounter with it, i can see why it gets a bad rap in netizen circles.

Oh that was another reason I was tryna get into iQIYI--to start Ultimate Note again. King In Love, I went through two eps right away, so i think there's only two left. I get that there's something between San and the CP but COME ON, Wang Rin is 1000x hotter. He makes the CP look short and ugly lmao. Plus, his nasty mom killed her dad, so why would she consider him since he basically defended his mom right up until he found out the truth. The truth that Wang Rin was already telling him. Pfft.  Idk why i stopped watching this, ig bc of my 2017 drama hiatus or whatever.

Next up, I randomly came upon an L drama where he plays a cat that can turn into a human. On MDL, the ratings are low, but those people have terrible taste. It's rated much higher on Viki. So far, it's quite cute, and very funny. L is way too perfect to play a human/cat lol. Another good choice would be Junho. Both of them are catmen and they have cat traits lol.  The drama is only 24 half hour eps or 12 traditional hour ten eps, so pretty short for a Kdrama I guess.

i DID indeed put SSS on hold to watch these other things lol, but I only have like 10 eps left so i'll be back.

IN music, confirmed that Show Luo and Koda Kumi are my consistent best and longest fandoms lol. I found Show's one Japanese album on my music drive that I never touch anymore and damn that shit was good. Sucks that it's not on Spotify though. Was also discovering some random new songs that were on Kuu's shitton of compilation albums. I've always ignored those, but since they're on Spotify, I can check them out finally.

howdy lol

I just randomly come back here for no good reason lol. Mainly to post a weekly media meme thing. Hell, I'd make this thing only for that if only i could remember to come back every week and post it fffffffffffffffff.

What are you currently watching/reading/listening?

Currently I'm extremely obsessed with Under The Power, and to a lesser extent, The Lost Tomb 2. UTP is such a strange egg. It's set up almost right away to be a romance, bc you know immediately that the cold and ruthless Lu Yi of the Brocade Guard is somehow gonna end up with feisty girl constable Yuan Jinxia. It also quickly shows signs of being a wuxia, but all the clan wars and tragic cursed heroes or whatever are more of a sideshow than anything, so then it becomes a slightly historical end of the Ming Dynasty kinda thing with a side of cold cases and mysteries. ALl of this is mainly just provide backdrop for how Jinxia and Lu Yi end up together. But it either avoids or does differently most of the worst romance tropes. Pearl clutchers will probably be offended at the power gap between the two and the fact that Lu Yi very often exercises his power over her, but not meanly so whatever it's still hot.

Reading, I've been off and on reading If on a winter's night a traveler lmao which is the weirdest fucking book but whatever it's kinda absorbing anyway. Music-wise this week I was all about catching up on Kim Hyun Joong's releases, new albums by Tai Yi and AKLO, and then some random Ren Jialun and Hou Minghao stuff. Oh yeah, I also caught up on BTOB's last two EPs, and found myself surprised that they still sound pretty good to me. I'm mostly out of Kpop at this point, especially boy groups.

What did you recently finish?

I most recently finished Kill It and The Game Towards Zero in dramaland. TGTZ was such a stupid drama. Other than the first maybe 10 eps, it was just a ridiculous farce, but i had to know what happened at the end so i slogged through it with much eye rolling. Kill It was great right up until the ending and the stupid cop girl outing the assassin. I was just starting to like her too. Eww. Haven't finished any books or manga recently so that's that. In terms of music I recently finished, I checked out Ailee finally, caught up on all Junno's releases, and also DinDin.

What will you watch/read/listen to next?

Well, I'm burning through UTP pretty hardcore, and not far behind in The Lost Tomb 2, so my guess is that I will start some combination of Autumn Cicada, also with Ren Jialun, Psych Hunter with Hou Minghao, and whatever the next Lost Tomb series is. I'm pretty into watching all the Lost Tomb thingers right now.   I also have some mild interest in starting Miss Hammurabi sometime soon.  No plans to start any new books for now.  Music-wise....not sure. Not much on the new release list yesterday. There was a new Butterfly in the Stomach album i saw. I really need to check out Ice Paper too.

stop kidding me now

I'm almost done with YAMH and Lost in 49 at 12 and 14 eps left respectively. I keep switching between which one I'm addicted to at any given time lol. YAMH is dragging a little bit, unfortunately. I'm hoping they have another good arc or whatever yet before it's over. I don't really find giving Kelei a medical problem to be all that gripping lol. I'll probably avoid modern dramas for awhile again after this one. Unless I decide to watch that other one with Jingting set in the old folks home lmao.  Lost in 49 was getting super interesting where I last left off but then I started bingeing on YAMH.

BUT as it's a boring chill Saturday, I want to watch something less intense so I decided to go back to watch the Four.  Gives you the feeling of like, Saturday matinee nonsense as a kid lol.  I'm watching on Viki and I see that Mojin the Lost Legend is there.  I've been wanting to watch that movie for awhile. I mean, Shu Qi and Chen Kun and tomb robbing?  HOw come i haven't watched it yet?  QIGUAI.

My drama moods are weird and I try to police them unnecessarily lmao.   I'm still thinking about starting Psych Hunter but I want to finish at least one other drama first.  I've also lowkey been thinking about trying  Confession with Junho and/or Secret Royal Inspector with L.  I've been wanting to see him in something else since I tried that stupid mask drama but he's only been in annoying romcoms. SRI sounds kinda funny. In that One More Time drama i remember being surprised by his comedic skill bc he always struck me as super serial.

Anyway...omg The Four has a bunch of super boring talking scenes about fate and deep love lmao. Too much wuxia is bad for the brain.  Like het versions are bad enough, imagine tryna watch heteronormative BL.  Gad the cringe.   I wish there was some wuxia like The Four with either a group of guys and no girls or a group of girls and no guys. No romance, just action.

Oh special, Viki has decided to fuck up and i haven't gotten through one episode yet. Feihua.

hao le

Lol i'm back. But I'm done with Kpop so anyone happening upon this journal, just forget everything that comes before this post bc i don't care anymore. I'm still a fan of some random solo artists and sorta girl groups, but I really don't care about boygroups any longer. EXO is ruined for me thanks to the traitors who joined another group and all the stupid fans who supported them so bye bye lah. I briefly considered going back to BTS since I love Suga still, but nah, that group is ruined for me too bc they no longer make the music that made me listen to them. Now, rapline gets hardly any lines, esp Sope, and their vocalists are still trash af. I liked BE for the most part and I guess it's good that they're not pots and pans like most boygroups out there but nah, I only like Suga and Hobi.

Anyway.

Decided more or less to go back to an older fandom: Cpop and Chinese entertainment in general. Of course, the ifandom for it is as dumb as ever but just in a different way. The landscape has massively shifted from being focused on Taiwan and Hong Kong to the mainland, but that's not all that surprising when you consider the political situation. The CCP has way more power than it did 10-12 years ago, which is when I first got into it. HK is basically irrelevant now on their own. And Taiwan is not much better. Stars in both places have to work in the Mainland in order to have work at all.

I'm not a fan of how this went down necessarily, but at the same time, I won't lie that dramas and movies being higher quality and more available means that I get to watch more of them. Bc I'm not just done with Kpop, I'm done with Korean dramas as well. I watched a buttload in 2016 and 2017 and just got sick of how a lot of them were the same stupid romcoms.  Japanese dramas I will still watch occasionally if I find an interesting one that's been subbed. Bc Japan has the problem of wanting to keep all their shit out of gaijin hands.

Reopening this so i can rant about things that are too annoying to rant about on TWitter. And Cpop Twitter is really stupid and annoying bc they're all newbs who got into it through either Yixing or other Chinese EXO members, or survival shows, OR that stupid Untamed drama. Don't get me started on the faux BL in Cdramas that fujoshis are ridiculously obsessed with lmao. They're such misogynists bc the only thing they want is no women. The dramas themselves could EASILY be construed as simple friendship only. Censors won't allow anything else so that's literally all they are. There's more "romance" in American buddy cop movies. But yeah, it gives MALE actors an easy way to get coin and popularity as they then move onto bigger and better things lmao. They even have a slang for it: going out to sea. That's all it is to them.

Dumb girlies.

My other rant is how much i fucking hate Yixing stans. I don't dislike him personally. But his STANS seem to think he's God's gift to Cpop and his music is showstopping never been done before when it is literally NOT. There are several Cpop artists who have been doing what he's doing for longer. Like Gong for example. They think mixing hiphop and electro beats with Chinese traditional music is new. They also think he can rap. I can't stand they asses. I have to refrain from dragging Yixing bc he doesn't really deserve it but ye gods his fans are insufferable.

Imma party till the sun down

Finished Bride of Habaek finally.  I think this is what we call a fairly cliche plot that was mostly executed well.  A lot of the really dramatic bits mostly fizzled out and there was no real "bad guy" or showdown or anything like that.  Very romance manga-ish lol.  I ended up mostly liking all the characters though, even bird brain.  Also, even though Nam Joo Hyuk is for sure a questionable actor, I think he embodied his character really well.  That is, I got the feeling that Habaek was a really naive and immature god and so his cute confused looks half the time I think really fit.  Even him being overly aggressive at times felt right.  Like, here is a guy who has no idea how to act around people lol.  Maybe his questionable acting just made him fall into that Idek, but either way it worked for the role.

Tried to catch up on the King Loves but it's still not gripping me very much.  As I said previously, just really freaking convoluted and someone's always randomly getting kidnapped and plotting and it's just ugh...  All I know is that I really like Hong Jonghyun and Yoona to a certain extent.

I finally got into OneHallyu lol.  The "who's gay" threads are farking hilarious.  If you believed these loonies, everyone in Kpop minus 1 or 2 per group are gay, even the girls!  As someone posted: when will these ppl admit that they're disgusting yaoi/yuri fetishists lol.  What's even more hilarious is all the "evidence" they use and are super serious how they post too so you can tell they actually fucking believe it.  I think the funniest bit that I saw was this:

Like tell me that isn't the biggest DUH ever.  Do you think that person will learn from it though?  Probably not.  It's also proof that they really are taking it seriously.  I've never really been in a non-Asian fandom so I can't say if the people in other fandoms are this freaking crazy.  They might be though bc I remember reading some stuff about the LOTR movies and Harry Potter that was pretty nuts.  Idk, scary that there's so many lunatics out there tbh.

What else?  I'm not sure if I'm an EXO or CBX fan tbh.  Probably the latter.  It's weird bc obviously CBX is IN EXO lol.  But I mean, with Exo, you figure, I only like the entire War album.  Half of Lotto and the other one are trash.  Otoh, I love all the CBX songs.  Even the Japanese ones and I'm sugoi hard on Kpop in Japan.  I also don't really care about any other Exo members other than CBX.  Except maybe Lay, but honestly, I still think he'll leave.  I came across this thing from a former SM trainee, who was American, and he basically said Tao and Lay would leave.  Obviously Tao did, but I mean...Lay not being in the War and such, I just lowkey bet that they'll sort of slowly cut him out and he'll just be in the China market releasing solos and acting.

So yeah I'm pretty sure it's CBX I stan lol, it's just EXO gets dragged along for the ride Idek.

level up that

I keep seeing stuff saying that the King Loves isn't meeting ratings and expectations and all that and honestly, I'm not surprised.  It's convoluted and annoying.  Meanwhile, I've been putting off watching the last episode of Bride for who knows what reason.  I do this with dramas I like Idek lol.  I'll still probably finish the King Loves...probably.  I think I'm more than halfway through, but still, it could get worse lol.

Finally was able to get to a screen on One Hallyu to send my validation email.  Istg I've been trying to get into that comm for months now.  It's the only ifan hangout that has fairly sharp people who don't subscribe to the SJW hypocrisy.  I'm constantly amazed, though I shouldn't be, how freaking arrogant these people are.  With the Wanna One guy thing, they're now basically saying that Westerners and English takes priority over Korean.  Like, Koreans can't use their language in a certain way bc it triggers Westerners.  Like...what is this actual Western-centric arrogant hypocrisy here?    They're basically saying that Kpop idols should learn Western culture and proper English before being allowed to debut.  Honestly, fuck ifans.  Most of them don't even buy stuff so they're a small slice of Kpoppers incomes anyway.  They get way more from Asian countries outside of Korea vs Westerners.  But isn't it just typical that these people would do the absolute least but demand to be completely catered to?

It's no wonder people stereotype "stupid Americans" around the world.  Acting like they and English are the top priority compared to anyone else.

Other fun things I found on ONeHallyu, apparently as a trainee Mark got in some argument with Hui that somehow also involved BAP's Youngjae and a Day6 guy translating lmao.  How the heck Mark.  Hui seems so easygoing too like hoooww lol.

I finally got into watching some Exo non-music stuff...well CBX anyway lol.  A few interviews basically.  I love the radio shows anyway bc the hosts are always so funny.  Them trying to explain the "hey mama" thing was amusing.  They oddly didn't seem to know?  It's basically old American slang and someone involved in the concept clearly knew bc the MV was all retro.  I also realized that Baekhyun doesn't have his ears pierced.  I find that super attractive just bc it stands out since most Kpop guys do have their ears pierced.

Baekhyun is just such a music nerd lol.  And he has the sliest smile.  That tells me everything I need to know about him tbh.

Let's make a night

Ok, as much as I like the War and half of the previous two albums, tbqh, I like CBX more.  I could do without the rest of the group, just give me those three lol.  Chen looks like an old-timey actor for some reason, Idek why I like Xiumin and Baekhyun....ahahah.  I can just tell he's a brat.  Or kind of a jerk, depending on which way you want to look at it.  He is exactly right my type lol.

I've been alternately obsessed with Hey Mama and Ka-Ching.  The thing is, even in the regular EXO songs, Chen and Baek get most of the lines most of the time.  The rest are so largely forgettable lol.  The Hey Mama mini is so quality.  Parts of Girls isn't bad, but I just cannot get completely behind Japanese releases most of the time. Unless it's all I got, like with Junho lol.  I still preferred his One album though.

Heh, so my journey to avoid avoiding Sparrow got EVEN MORE derailed last night when I discovered that Taec's new drama was airing.  It's this thing about a cult and I'm waiting for it to skip time bc dude, Taec cannot pass for a high schooler anymore ok.  The cult leader is the smarmy dude from the K2 and that's just a totally perfect casting choice tbh.

New Bride of Habaek episode last night as well and I was totally waiting for Nam Joo Hyuk to get his unfortunate angry facial tic when he caught the demigod dude on top of his woman, but amazingly he didn't. Progress!  Him and Ji Soo need to hurry up and get better at acting bc wtf all my faves are going to the military lately.  I've been angsting over Ji Chang Wook for months and then it was announced that Lee Jong Suk is going too and I was like, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.  But it got worse.  Lee Soo Hyuk is ALSO going.  All my creys.

That leaves me with Hong Jonghyun, L and Junho lol.  NO seriously, those three were my faves. D:

I'm also getting increasingly worried that Hyunseung is going to get his sooner rather than later and then I will really cry.  Especially since he hasn't had a proper comeback yet.  If he'd had that, I could handle it.  Maybe.

This is an un-cranky entry, so I need to add a bit of crank.  I find it REALLY annoying, as in it's turning into a pet peeve, when people insist on using real names instead of stage names.  Like, whY?  They clearly gave themselves stage names for a reason, Idk why you have to insist on using their real names like you're patting yourself on the back for knowing them or something, especially when they're common knowledge.  Is it the American need for things to be "real" or what?  Like it seriously bugs me.

Wutchoo think about that

I have nfi why I keep avoiding restarting Sparrow bc I was honestly really enjoying it, but I ended up starting Bad Guys, a 2014 Kdrama that somehow escaped my notice back then.  But I wasn't quite as into watching airing dramas then, anyway.  So it's kinda unique for a Kdrama in that it's mainly a whole lot of asskicking.  What I think is interesting though, is that it's very violent, but unlike American shows in the same vein, it doesn't show anything.  Knives are censored and so are scenes like the fridge full of body parts, or when the assassin guy stabs this guy's hands to the desk like three times.  But you know what?  It's not necessary.  I've said this for years, but the super explicit violence that fucking Americans are so fond of, is NOT NECESSARY because people's imaginations are pretty strong and can easily fill in what the screen doesn't show or the page doesn't say.  I frankly find this type of writing and filming quite weak.  It's very telling and not showing.  The impact is just as strong without seeing it.  I can easily imagine a fridge full of body parts plenty vividly, at least, as vivid as I want it to be lol.  But having that choice is important.

Yep, I make no secret of the fact that I think East Asian shows and music are superior.  Fight me.

The other thing I feel like going into reams of discussion about is the Ikon controversy.  Obviously I've said many times that I really don't care about the "problematic" things idols do according to over-sensitive ifans and I still don't, but I still find what they did rather tacky and unpleasant.  And also indefensible.  See, that's the thing, even if I don't care about what they do, I also don't defend it if it's genuinely shitty.  Idols crossdressing to do girl group choreo has always rubbed me the wrong way.  And I'm not even a girl group fan, but I just find it unnecessary to mock them by dressing up in stereotypical "girl" costume and doing the choreo as ridiculously as possible.  It's like....are they not real artists?  Are their dances somehow less important or skilled?  Why can't you just do their choreo normally?

But Ikon took it a step further by also including a bunch of harassment kinda stuff, liking lifting skirts and simulating sex and that's just...not funny.  I don't think girls do that when they do boy group dances or even crossdressing.  They COULD.  But they don't.  Predictably, their dumb stans decided to come out and defend it by calling anyone having a problem a "homophobe" which is like....the absolute worst use of an overused not!insult ever.  It's like, yeah, that's not only a reach, but it's being willfully obtuse.  It's quite obvious they were doing what they were doing BECAUSE they were dressed like girls.  Trying to pretend otherwise is dumb af and I seriously question anyone's intelligence or comprehension if they seriously think that.

Lol in other shitty fan things, I finally realized why Baekhyun was getting so much hate on various sites when I was paying attention to him outside of EXO.  He was dating ofc and fangirls got their pathetic hearts broken bc he turned out to 1.not be gay, 2.??  I mean, I honestly don't get this.  What does an idol's dating life have to do with you?  You think they're kids or something?  Guarantee that 98% of them are fucking girls who are not YOU, whether they publicly say they're dating or not.  So get the actual fuck over it.

it goes down down baby

So the King Loves finally got interesting, even though the Crown Prince bugs the heck out of me, I love Yoona and Jonghyun, but this last episode I watched, major cringe at the writer.  The stupid villain guys go to prove that Yoona is San, i.e. the noblewoman by bringing a letter to the servant who has been disguised as her.  Predictably, the servant shows that she can't read the letter yada yada, cue smirking villain.  But srsly dudes?  It's been SEVEN YEARS and you're gonna tell me that the servant, who is supposed to be permanently pretending to be the noblewoman, hasn't been taught TO READ?  REALLY??  Like, how would you miss such an obvious thing.  Those are the kind of failures of logic for the sake of plot that I just CANNOT with as a writer.  I mean, I'm just imagining them being all, oh dang, I can't believe we got found out.  If only we'd taught that chick to read in the last seven years. I knew I forgot something!

Le please.

The only other thing I got is lol so much @ that "who do you think is gay hurhur" thread at One Hallyu.  Like, here are some people desperately in need of lives.  I was reading a few pages and was cackling when the actual gay guy came in and was all, I can't believe you all are taking this stuff seriously when it's based on fanservice, cultural differences and mistranslations.  Like, mte dude.  There's so much wrong with this entire thing.  First of all, why are they so invested in the idea that half of Kpop is gay?  Nevermind the complete unlikelihood of that being the case.  And secondly, to think you can actually prove it based on what you see on camera is fucking dumber than hell.  Think of the boygroups in the US and what, like two or three eventually came out as gay?  There's no 10% dudes, it's like 2%, so that would be roughly one guy out of 10 boygroups assuming 7 members each. MAYBE.  The real problem with US fans is how they look at everything through a US lens.  As someone pointed out in, Omona believe it or not, the reason there's such a huge cultural difference with Asian men showing affection to each other is because the issue of homosexuality is not prominent. Like, it's a fringe thing.  Whereas here, especially in fandom, people are hyperaware of anything being even slightly gay. Like, omo they stood next to each other, maybe their shirts were touching!  Gay!

Srsly, stop. Y'all look dumb. That's how you end up with GOT7 and their annoyance with shippers.

Oh wait, I have one more thing lol.  Apparently Yoseob posted an Insta pic that was very obviously taken in the exact same place that Hyunseung took his apology letter pic.  But he deleted it right away so who knows if HS even saw it.  And that's my question really, is why did he delete it?  I saw someone make a good point though that HS was not apologizing to his trash haters or entitled fans, he was quite obviously apologizing to Beast and for whatever reason, felt the need to do it publicly.  So really, all those people need to shut up with their "finally" or "too late" nonsense bc he wasn't doing it for you.  Go back to your trashbin.

in the middle of the night

Completely caught up with Bride of Habaek and it's halfway through.  Pretty glad this is a full hour drama instead of those 35 minute things, that was actually annoying.  But anyway, I love it so far and even though it's moved relatively slowly, it hasn't been boring.  I'm already waiting impatiently for Monday lol.  Finally got around to starting the King Loves and...ugh, Idk about it.  Contrary to popular opinion, I like Yoona quite a lot, but if this is going to be another set-up ship with HJH as the third wheel who then dies tragically, I am 100% not here for that.  That's why I dropped Master of the Mask and it turned out EXACTLY how I thought it would upon reading recaps.  Like, I literally knew what would happen.  That is not good storytelling folks.

Ofc then there's the ones that are so convoluted that sure you don't know where they're going, but you also don't CARE.  For example, that I Hear Your Voice drama, that was really good bc it wasn't convoluted at all, but I couldn't be sure where it was going and I also couldn't be sure that Lee Jong Suk was going to get the girl.  At times I really thought she'd go for the guy her age and the kid would give up or die or something lol.  That's all I ask, is that bit of uncertainty where you don't know exactly if what you  hope happens will.

So yeaaaah, I'll probably give it a few more episodes to try to convince me that the story won't be predictable af.  Honestly, I kinda want to go back and finish SHR.  I only quit it back then bc I knew Baek was gonna die and I didn't like it lol.  I think I'm over it though and I do want to see what happens with So so I never read any recaps.  Same with that mermaid thing.  My top 5 most likely restarts are probably:

1.Mystic Nine
2.SHR
3.The mermaid thing
4.Ice Fantasy
5.Wu Xin

In Kpop news, Hyunseung finally released his single with p.much zero promo by Cube until the day before.  Loooool, it's so ridiculous.  I really hope that's a prerelease though and there's an album out there somewhere.  I can't believe they would really put him in the dungeon for two years and then only give him a measly single with no promo.  Like how much do they hate him and what kind of masochist is HE that he resigned with them?

I saw an insta post with Hyuna seemingly recording.  By herself though, so so much for my plot twist where Triple H came back instead ahahah.  Idk if I posted about it before, but the KARD album grew on me quite a bit.  LIke, I guess I expected something different bc of all the hype, but now that I'm over it, I like what they're doing.

coffee and go home

I wasn't sure if I would, but I did, I started another drama.  My two main candidates were Bride of the Water God and The King Loves.  I chose the former bc Idk really.  Maybe bc it's based on a manga lol.  The other thing is that the "immortal coming to the human realm" is literally one of my favorite romance tropes, maybe THE favorite.  Also, Nam Joo Hyuk is foiiiiiiiiiine.  I couldn't remember where I saw him before, but oh yeah, Scarlet Heart Ryo lol.  Reminder that I lowkey still want to finish that. >>

Ok so I only watched the first episode, but I liked it.  It was funny and ahahah you can't beat the traveling through worlds/time thing where the traveler ends up naked once he gets there. XD  Apparently "people" *coughomonacough* didn't like the first eps bc the acting was bad or some shit.  Obviously most acting criticism is usually pretty arbitrary anyway, but honestly, he's playing a total pompous ass character and I'm buying it so that's all I ask.  I kinda like the way he's all matter-of-fact about it and doesn't really show much emotion while he's making his decrees lol.

The girl is funny, like her expressions, especially when he starts talking about how he's a god of this and that.

Ofc it's just the first episode and I might hate it eventually lol who knows.  I'm getting much better at dropping dramas when I start losing interest in the characters or plot rather than slogging through them.  Confession too, I didn't literally finish Suspicious Partner, I read recaps of the last Idk, 8 episodes or so and watched the pivotal twist scene, but that's it.  I just didn't care about the characters anymore. =/

That's mainly what it comes down to for me, I need to care about the characters and their struggle.  Once I don't, I usually lose interest.

you can't make me smile

Ugh, I finally finished Suspicious Partner and I srsly felt like I wasted half the show.  I mean, half the show was wasted.  Or something.  BASICALLY THEY COULD HAVE FOUND THAT ENDING A LOT QUICKER DANGIT.  It started out so well, there was chemistry between the leads, the killer was sinister and then it just all went to crap.  And they literally left the ENTIRE plot to the last Idk, 4 episodes or so.  That could have worked if anything else was interesting, but it literally wasn't.  All I wanted to know was why fucking Hyunsoo was killing people. THAT'S ALL.  I couldn't care less about Noh and Eun getting together or the other guy and Cha or whatever else bc they sucked at making that interesting.

What a stupid fugly pointless drama for JCW to be in before he enlists.  I'm so mad. >:[

That reminds me that I need to find Fabricated City though.

Ok, the twist was kinda twisty, but I was so mad at that point that it didn't even matter.  I was like, you fucking took 38 EPISODES TO GET TO THIS JINJJA WEI.

Anyway new shows new shows.  I forgot the King Loves with HJH is airing now and I did kinda want to at least try Bride of the Water God and Istg I'm so done with prosecution law dramas for awhile and you better not @ me with any romcoms for awhile either.  I just can't with dramas that start so promising and then end shitty.  Things were going so well, what with Tunnel and Chief Kim. I thought I was on a roll.

rather be wicked

Finished Lookout the other night and I have to say, the ending was extremely MEH compared to the rest of the show.  I felt like it was hovering at a 9 and then I dropped it to a 7.  There were two main problems for me with the ending.  Spoilers all over this bitch so be warned.

1.The fact that every single character almost behaved completely irrationally and out of character in order for that evil kid's plot to work.  Just, especially Lee.  Like I don't believe for a second that she would have gone off by herself intending to kill Sooji.  She never displayed any tendency towards that kind of irrational, overly emotional behavior.

2.The end basically left everything hanging.  It's only obvious that Dohan died, but then again, what was that scene with him not wanting to call Kim hyung?  Meanwhile, Sooji, Bomi and Kyungsoo are still doing their vigilante shtick so why didn't any of them go to jail?  What happened to Seungro and his monster kid?  None of that was addressed.  Maybe there's a season 2, Idk, but the ending was barely an ending at all.

Side note, that priest was HOT and I'm mad.

Anyway, so that one's over, just need to make myself finish Suspicious Partner so I can focus on Sparrow.  My sugoi drama phase is kinda fading for now, but I'll probably want to watch the new Lee Jong Suk one at the very least.  But it also doesn't air until September lol.

In Kpop things, I hear that Hui and Edawn are producing a song or songs for that Wanna One group.  I really didn't intend to care about them as I didn't follow that show, but them are my dudes.

gimme that’s alright

Never really thought I'd end up a de facto Cube stan, but I like all their main artists and two out of three of my top artists period are Pentagon and Hyunseung.  I have to admit too, their photobooks are truly quality.  All the Pentagon albums plus the Hyunseung album, the book itself was great, but also the pictures are really nicely done.  They also don't look overly photoshopped or whatever.  Which, hahah, is kinda born out by when Hyuna was talking about how the Triple H photobooks weren't photoshopped excepted for Edawn's happy trail lol.  But ahem, yeah.  That exchange was so funny though.  Edawn always gives no fucks.  On one hand he was like, why are we talking about this, but then on the other, he's explaining how he shaved it but they still had to edit it lmao.

Happy trails are  hot, no need to be embarrassed boy.

Still a bit mad at Hyunseung's fan thing getting canceled, but apparently he made a now-deleted comment on his Insta that the cancellation didn't have anything to do with personal issues or something between him and Cube, and not to worry, so I guess that's some consolation.  It's still Cube's fault though, afaic.  Since setting up the thing was their job, fucking it up is still their fault.  Most places I've read though seem to think that it's an album he'll be releasing in July.  I really hope so bc this is probably his last chance to do something before having to go into the military.

Haven't posted about my drama watching lately.  Mostly bc I've kinda laid off a bit.  I'm honestly only legitimately enjoying Lookout.  I dropped Master of the Mask and Suspicious Partner has gotten rather tedious too, though there was a bit of a twist in this last batch of episodes so maybe it will perk up next week.  I'm crushing so hard on Choi Taejoon over JCW lol and that's unexpected af bc I love JCW.

Saw some more dumb drama about fans, most likely ifans bc it's always ifans, being mad about JB making comments that he doesn't like guys in "that way" lol and I'm just like, if y'all shippers weren't so disgusting, he wouldn't feel like he has to clarify things like that.  GOT7 has repeatedly said they don't care for that nonsense.  I'm sure MOST male idols think it's nasty, just GOT7 obviously has the balls to say it publicly.  That's why I love them. :)

Try my luck

Tbh, I'm really surprised at how many Yesung plays I have. I'm a well-known ballad hater and that's literally all he does for his solo. Furthermore, I don't like Super Junior. It's definitely one of my tastes that I can't explain lol.

So Pentagon - Ceremony on June 12th at noon KST and NCT 127 - Cherry Bomb on June 14th at 6pm KST. I only recently discovered that Infinite's comeback never happened bc Sungkyu got injured. Idk how I missed that. There seems to be all this baited breath about them staying together, but it sounds like they're talking to Woollim about renewing their contract. Hah, I've been paying too much attention to Kpop lately though bc I was all confused when everything came out for Junho's new album to be released at the end of July. I was like, what, all at once? What is this? But oh yeah, it's Japanese and they don't do all that nonsense lmao.

Supposedly Jinwoon is supposed to release something this month too and I saw another article about HS and that one made it sound like there is a mini or full album in the works but the July track is a prerelease? Idk, I hope they're right, but I won't bank on it. Lately I haven't been paying much attention to any releases outside of Kpop. It's gotten that bad.

I'm reaching high boredom levels with both Suspicious Partner and RMOM. The romance in both is contrived and neither one is moving fast enough. Why can't you be like Lookout and leave me in suspense at the end of every episode? Not to mention all the action and plotting. I'll probably start another backdrama soon. Considering Voice or Missing Nine, bc I'm really in love with JCW's friend's face.

I said this already, but I'm officially paying a lot more attention to Pentagon from now on lol.

As great as this fancam is though, it doesn't fully show the true highlight of Edawn's part ahahah.

get 'em get 'em

Still watching Sparrow and my gosh is that Bicheng chick annoying.  She is such a flower vase.  Does absolutely nothing but pine over Chen Shen.  Even the actress chick is more tolerable than her.  Lol, Li Yi Feng is so hot in this though.  Like, this is a character I would write.  His face when he's listening to the actress girl's fake tears was straight hilarious.  He was all, wtf is this shit.  In other drama crap, I'm so tired of the romance in RMOM.  It's incredibly contrived and soppy.  You really expect me to believe they fell in love at first sight over some fireflies? Pleaaaase.  So annoying.  I'm lowkey mad that I'm still watching it tbh.

Lookout however, remains flawfree.  DF actually got the new eps out early today so I watched both right away.  I was so stressed when I thought Kyungsu was gonna get caught lol.  Damn that priest dude has a deep voice.  I haven't caught onto what his role is yet, but he's obviously helping Dohan in some capacity.

Meanwhile, in ridiculous Kpop drama...read that an UP10TION member had to take a break due to stress stemming from...get this, bullying over fake sex assault claims.  So not only is there a bunch of nonsense sex assault claims over there, but now freaking netizens can just accuse a guy of it and it sticks.  Like, what even.  I'm srsly sick of that even being a thing and everyone jumping to take the girl's side all the time, when more often than not it turns out to be fake, but CERTAIN sites don't even report the fakery.  No one stops to think for a second how the guy might be affected by having his name dragged through the mud. People are trash.

Then that whole TOP thing escalated quickly.  Apparently he overdosed.  I'm curious as to why they're all lying about it though.  The description of him being in a deep sleep is a total benzo overdose symptom so Idk why they're trying to spin it as something else.  It's unfortunate, but benzos are addictive and he should consider getting professional help.

Was watching all the Triple H bts stuff last night and whoaaaa Edawn is ripped lol.  He seems like such a weirdo too, but then he's all ripped.  Idk how to feel about that tbh.  Hui is totally not my type, but I still think he's cute.  Hyuna looks so good with the natural shade of red hair.

In completely unrelated commentary, it unreasonably bugs me when people refuse to use stage names.  Like, do you feel somehow cooler that you know their real names or are referring to them by their real names?  Idk, the whole fans always trying to be close to celebs in some way is weird to me.
