Noooooooo I'm inching closer and closer to getting back into VK and i'm not liking it lmao. But I keep rrunning into old faves. Have been listening to a little old MUCC today and then DR again and tryna figure out why the latter eventually became my favorite and highest charting Jrock band on my Last FM. Also doing the comparison I never wanted to do back then: Tatsu vs Hizumi.  Just on Dope alone compared to the ten songs I used to stan way back then for MUCC and I have to give it to Hizumi. I see why they called him the Beast Vocal. There's pretty much nothing he can't do. His growls were so much more authoritative and even musical to an extent compared to Tatsu.

Tatsu was a very strong singer and after a certain point, really didn't sound like the typical VK vocalist, but his falsetto was always terrible and weak, and his vibrato was annoying and kinda used in all the wrong places. It sounded kinda like his voice was shaking, so idk if he did that on purpoose or if it was just a lack of control on his part for whatever reason. OFC he was also known for having a solid lower range, but Hizumi has it as well lol. And he has no problem hitting falsetto notes quickly and transitioning back smoothly. With DR, he used a LOT of shred though, even when he wasn't growling, and Tatsu didn't really do that.

Hizumi's rap-singing is better too. Back to the vibrato thing though like, Tatsu had this annoying habit of sprinkling it throughout his lines and not just at the end of lines, so it kinda sounded like warbling, but to me was a lack of control. Hizumi's is so controlled and right at the end of lines where it should be. It's just the way he was able to mix up clean singing with shred, super powerful death growls, and whatever else is honestly really impressive. He just had a lot of control. LIke, he did and still can just haul off with one of those death growls and go right back to singing the very next breath. When Tatsu did it, it was usually a line-ending thing, i.e. before an instrumental break.

The other thing is here, is that I'm better at being objective right at this point in time bc the last time I listened to any VK in any capacity was like, 2017. AND i've also spent the last six years listening mostly to Kpop and Cpop. Granted, there's a lot of bad Kpop singers out there, but either way, listening to Hizumi with NUL for the first time in a long time, and I'm honestly more impressed with him than I even was in the past. Like he is very objectively a VERY talented singer. Both now and back with DR.

Normies never know the word, they always say like, a singer is "stable" lmao but the word you're looking for is resonance first, and then control. Finding a singer who has both, whether in pop OR rock, is actually quite difficult. Then you can talk about other things like flexibility, pitch, technique, etc. Based on NUL, i feel like Hizumi could prolly sing just about anything at this point, but MUCC was also pretty genre-hopping and Tatsu was normally able to do different styles. I'm definitely not saying Tatsu was bad, but he objectively did not have a strong falsetto, and that vibrato was annoying af. By those two points alone, Hizumi wins.

Gah, just putting that down makes me so happy that he was able to come back and start singing again bc he sounds amazing still. I should prolly listen to something recent from MUCC to see what I think of Tatsu's current singing. The last thing i heard from them was in 2015 lol.

Apparently the reason I still have rather strong feelings for D'espairsRay's music, though admittedly more Hizumi than anything that's why I'm addicted to NUL, is bc I never fell out with them like I did with previous faves like MUCC, Merry, L'arc, EXO, etc. It's hard to overcome that lol, esp with M&M bc my main reason for falling out was the music. With L'arc it was Hyde's annoying ass and the fandom. With EXO, i pretty much need B and K to leave completely in order for me to care about the group again.

But I was a strong fan of DR's music until the very end and their breakup and esp Hizumi being unable to sing was like, the absolute worst lol. It didn't get me out of VK at the time, but I can't really think of a worse breakup. Or a worse retirement. NUL honestly doesn't sound a ton different from DR even though it was mostly Karyu composing DR's stuff from what I recall. Obviously Hizumi has similar tastes. I would say it's a bit more EDM to an extent, but at the same time, there are some pretty solid guitar parts as well. I like his 90% clean singing in NUL even though I always thought he was one of the absolute best in the scene at transitioning from growls and such to clean singing. And powerful clean singing at that. Like, he always had great resonance, a good range, and super clear and clean falsetto, no thready weak shit.

So yeah, he was pretty much my favorite singer in that scene even though I did like Tatsu from MUCC a lot, but I honestly don't think he had the sheer range that Hizumi has. His falsettos were pretty shit for one thing lol. But Hizumi also never overused falsetto like a shitton of VK vocalists did. And lbr, most VK vocalists sucked.  He was just always a surprisingly really professional singer to me lol. And that's the other part to this addiction I have right now is that even though DR was the first VK band I ever heard, I was never into them as a band so to speak. Not like I was with Merry and MUCC for example, following all their stuff super closely and buying untold amounts of shit from them lmao.

Bc of that, when I fell out with them, none of the members I considered my faves or whatever could save it. With DR it was different. I really didn't follow them other than listening to their stuff and buying new albums and I saw them three times in concert. It was only Hizumi that I actually had feels for. So going back to listening to them has turned out to be super easy to do and well, they WERE the only Jrock act at the top of my Last FM since I started anew account back in 2012.

I've been tryna explain this to myself for the last week lol. Bc I honestly thought I was totally done with caring about VK, including old bands I used to like, but when I found Hizumi's new band, I couldn't resist going back to listening DR too. So the not caring about VK thing still mostly holds. I wouldn't even call NUL VK. The two other guys with him are just like, a couple of old dudes lol. One's from ABS and the other from Def Spiral i wanna say? I think they might have been VK idk lol. Either way, there's a sound, and they don't have it.

Anyway this is just rambling lol.
