So the three main reasons I normally dislike Japanese Kpop releases are:
1.The language. A lot of groups will either overdo it on the English, or their Japanese will just sound so garbled that it's distracting. Maybe this isn't a problem for people who aren't familiar with or don't listen to Japanese music, but as someone who has for a long time, listening to Japanese with wrong emphasis all over the place just kills me lol.
2.The lack of originality. The other thing I see, is groups literally rehashing almost all of their Korean songs and then maybe only a couple original Japanese ones. I just find that...Idk disrespectful. Bc I'm sure their fans buy their Korean releases so why not actually make an effort and release original songs? A lot of times, the original Japanese songs are also terrible so.
3.The sound. Jpop has a different sound than Kpop. Most popular mainstream Jpop artists, whether they lean rock, pop or hiphop, combine genres a lot. I find that sometimes Kpop groups will make an attempt at this and it somehow sounds really horrible.
In essence, my biggest problem with nearly all of them is that they sound half-assed af most of the time. That's why I'm really impressed with EXO. YOu knew that was coming. But I am. It took me forever to even bother with the Japanese releases I knew they had (unlike some other dumbos), bc I just doubted that they would be worth my time. Obviously I was hella wrong lol. But yeah, their stuff is super quality and to me fits in with both their discography in general, but also with the JPop sound so to speak. Plus, they aren't using any more English than they usually use, and pronunciation of both it and Japanese is generally good. Add in the lack of rehashes. They're only using the rehashed Love Me Right and Idk if Lightsaber counts bc I thought they came out at about the same time, the Korean and Japanese one. But the rest are obviously all original songs.
I'm willing to bet that their full album when it finally comes out, is going to slay.
