faaaaaallling
Jun. 18th, 2022 01:21 pm Noooooooo I'm inching closer and closer to getting back into VK and i'm not liking it lmao. But I keep rrunning into old faves. Have been listening to a little old MUCC today and then DR again and tryna figure out why the latter eventually became my favorite and highest charting Jrock band on my Last FM. Also doing the comparison I never wanted to do back then: Tatsu vs Hizumi. Just on Dope alone compared to the ten songs I used to stan way back then for MUCC and I have to give it to Hizumi. I see why they called him the Beast Vocal. There's pretty much nothing he can't do. His growls were so much more authoritative and even musical to an extent compared to Tatsu.
Tatsu was a very strong singer and after a certain point, really didn't sound like the typical VK vocalist, but his falsetto was always terrible and weak, and his vibrato was annoying and kinda used in all the wrong places. It sounded kinda like his voice was shaking, so idk if he did that on purpoose or if it was just a lack of control on his part for whatever reason. OFC he was also known for having a solid lower range, but Hizumi has it as well lol. And he has no problem hitting falsetto notes quickly and transitioning back smoothly. With DR, he used a LOT of shred though, even when he wasn't growling, and Tatsu didn't really do that.
Hizumi's rap-singing is better too. Back to the vibrato thing though like, Tatsu had this annoying habit of sprinkling it throughout his lines and not just at the end of lines, so it kinda sounded like warbling, but to me was a lack of control. Hizumi's is so controlled and right at the end of lines where it should be. It's just the way he was able to mix up clean singing with shred, super powerful death growls, and whatever else is honestly really impressive. He just had a lot of control. LIke, he did and still can just haul off with one of those death growls and go right back to singing the very next breath. When Tatsu did it, it was usually a line-ending thing, i.e. before an instrumental break.
The other thing is here, is that I'm better at being objective right at this point in time bc the last time I listened to any VK in any capacity was like, 2017. AND i've also spent the last six years listening mostly to Kpop and Cpop. Granted, there's a lot of bad Kpop singers out there, but either way, listening to Hizumi with NUL for the first time in a long time, and I'm honestly more impressed with him than I even was in the past. Like he is very objectively a VERY talented singer. Both now and back with DR.
Normies never know the word, they always say like, a singer is "stable" lmao but the word you're looking for is resonance first, and then control. Finding a singer who has both, whether in pop OR rock, is actually quite difficult. Then you can talk about other things like flexibility, pitch, technique, etc. Based on NUL, i feel like Hizumi could prolly sing just about anything at this point, but MUCC was also pretty genre-hopping and Tatsu was normally able to do different styles. I'm definitely not saying Tatsu was bad, but he objectively did not have a strong falsetto, and that vibrato was annoying af. By those two points alone, Hizumi wins.
Gah, just putting that down makes me so happy that he was able to come back and start singing again bc he sounds amazing still. I should prolly listen to something recent from MUCC to see what I think of Tatsu's current singing. The last thing i heard from them was in 2015 lol.
