Right, so I'm finishing ROP here with two episodes left and like, I find it really grimly hilarious that all the insane Ning brothers think that Ning Yi crafted this genius plan to the throne when like MOST of it was just him reacting to his dopey brothers constantly trying to kill him. And in the end, the Emperor makes him the heir on his death bed.  Meanwhile, icb ZIyan and Ning Yi break up in like, the first few scenes lmao.  I might be officially sick of Zhiwei though bc the Dacheng ppl are just ridiculous and selfish. Especially the bald fuck. As far as I can tell, they literally still blame Ning Yi for something he did as a fucking eight year old.  And I really had higher hopes for Zhiwei to be a reasonable, intelligent woman, but she's gone full emo. LIke, Helian literally tries to shoot Ning Yi, and the latter shoots him back and to her, HE'S the bad guy??? Shenme??

I feel like the writer is ruining her characters. I can understand some of the stuff I'm seeing, but I was really holding Zhiwei in particular to a high standard and she is disappointing me big time lol. Her decisions here in the last several eps don't make sense.  As far as I can see, she doesn't even realize that Helian had a crossbow?  It was obvious in the frame.

One thing I've decided to remember though is that when it comes to anything serialized, the Big Picture and/or ending is almost always disappointing compared to the journey of getting there, i.e. the episodes.  It's just kind of a fact.  That's part of why I wanted to end this at episode 68 when Ning Yi becomes emperor.

I'm also extremely laughing at Chen Kun's extremely dramatic deep voice he's affecting as emperor. I mean, it's kinda hot but is it necessary?

Ok, so how are we supposed to believe that she doesn't think Helian was tryna kill either her or Ning Yi when she turned right as he was holding up a crossbow??? I can't get over this. It's such a huge plot gap.  The part where Yueling tells both Zhiwei and Ning Yi that they have so much blood on their hands...well, did she lie?  And yet...again, wasn't most of it reactionary?  And most of it ppl trying to kill them.

I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING.

This show plays around WAY too much with the unreliable narrator.  Like, to the point it's kinda cheap. How tf is the emperor still alive lmao.

Ooop my favorite ship in Ning Yi and Ziyan isn't dead after all. |D  I'll just go with their marriage instead hao ma?

Is she really gonna believe the old man's bitter words?

And the answer is yep.

Welp.  I won't give away the actual factual ending.  But...on one hand, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, however, on the other, I feel like they had to twist Zhiwei's character mightily to get there and I'm not super happy with that.   Oh well. It could have been worse I guess.  And the show itself was truly epic. The acting was top notch, and the twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat at times. So ultimately, yes, I would totally recommend it. One of the best Cdrams I've seen and certainly the best ancient drama of ANY sort that I've seen.
