Ning Qi: Kneel, or I will charge you with impudence. I'm the heir to the throne.

Ning Yi: Heir to the throne? :))))  It's not like I haven't killed one before.

Lmao I still love Ning Yi. The only thing keeping me in this clusterfuck.  Well, I tell a lie. It was great getting to about episode idk 55 or so and then it took a weird turn where no one's actions lined up with their goals and motivations and I really can't fully understand why Ning Qi turned into such a douche.  Was it just brief contact with Ning Sheng?  Why does literally all the emperor's kids except Ning Ji and the late Ning Qiao have a hate boner for Ning Yi???  He didn't step on them on his way to the top, they kept trying to kill him and they'd already done things to him and his mother.

Let me just reiterate what I said in the last post about Bai Jingting being the only youngish actor in this with a big role. He's damn good and holds his own with the veterans. The two significant scenes with him and Chen Kun were just whewwwww. The tension was simmering. And they both nailed it.

I've been having this debate with myself on whether it's a writing error to not have characters actions line up with their motivations and goals.   On the surface, it /feels/ like it is a mistake, but then again, IRL, people make dumb decisions against their own interests all the time. It's that fine line between crafting realistic characters and a realistic narrative but also remembering that real life doesn't always make the best fiction. Sometimes it's boring and frustrating to read/watch bc you expect fictional characters to be BETTER in a way. To be more heroic and do things that make sense lmao.

But there's a lot of missing parts in this drama that never get revisited. I have two eps left and Ning Yi is now the emperor (and somehow grew a mighty fine goatee before his actual coronation), but I still don't know what Nanyi told Ning Yi about his mother's death that Ning Yi said he believed. Bc previously, he was ready to kill Nanyi, and Nanyi's actions that day didn't make a BIT of sense, not when he was already questioning his master's actions and that he didn't want to kill Ning Cheng OR Ning Yi. So something else obviously went down off-screen and that's what he was confessing to Ning Yi. But they never showed what it was.

LE SIGH. IN any case. I'm tempted to just stop at ep.68 and woot Ning Yi is emperor now who tf cares about Zhiwei's stupid goals. But obviously I can't do that.

I did leave off last night though and went back to Lost in 1949, which is a bit less frustrating bc I can at least understand some of Liwen's behavior and Zhicai doesn't really know what he wants, that's fairly clear.  Still waiting for the reveal that Yiying is gay though bc /come on/.
